Cover Letter Template 2026: Write It in 20 Minutes
· 2 min read · Martina Kováčová, HR Consultant
Quick answer: A good cover letter fits on half a page, is written for a specific company, and explains in three paragraphs why you're a good fit for the role. 46% of people find finding a suitable job difficult (Ipsos, 2023) — a short, targeted letter helps you stand out. Below you'll find a template and a 20-minute process.
What is a cover letter and when should you attach one?
A cover letter is a short accompanying text to your resume, explaining why you want the job and what you'll bring to the company. Attach it whenever the job listing asks for it, and for positions where communication and initiative matter.
For some manual or part-time jobs, companies don't expect one — in that case, a good resume is enough.
How to write a cover letter (structure)?
Stick to three paragraphs, each with a clear purpose:
- Introduction — which position you're interested in and why this particular company.
- Body — 2–3 specific experiences or skills that fit the job.
- Conclusion — what you'll bring to the company and a call to meet.
Cover letter template (example)
Dear Mr./Ms. [name],
I read your job posting for the [position name] role with great interest.
I'm interested in working at [company] because [specific reason].
In my previous job, I [specific achievement or skill],
which matches what you're looking for in this position. I'm also
skilled at [additional skill].
I'd be glad to show you in person how I can contribute
to [company's goal]. Thank you for considering my application.
Sincerely,
[Full Name, contact]
Tip: don't copy text from the internet word for word — recruiters know these templates. Use the skeleton and fill it in with your own specific examples. If you're looking for an official template, Europass has one too.
What mistakes should you avoid?
- Repeating your resume — the letter should add context, not summarize your CV.
- Generic phrases like "I'm reliable and hardworking" without proof.
- The same letter for every company — it's obvious at first glance.
- Length over one page — shorter is better.
